After
graduating from Art Center College of Design with a degree with honors in
graphic/packaging design, Matt Strelecki relocated
to Atlanta, Georgia where he worked on projects for The Wall Street Journal,
Time Inc., and the Atlanta Olympic Bid Committee. Later, he became the art
director for Atlanta Magazine, and then for Traditional Home
magazine. In 1996, he was promoted to be the Executive Director Design for
Meredith Books, where he worked on projects for Better Homes and Gardens,
Discovery Channel, Sony Pictures, Disney, TLC, Marvel Comics, Dreamworks,
Nickelodeon, Warner Bros., and Universal Pictures, among many other notable
clients. Since 2009, he has been art directing Successful Farming
magazine and has been nominated for more than 60 design awards in that time.
Matt says he owe his success to his first and second boss and his colleagues.
And he likes to thank his photographer brother, who inspired him to shoot
images as well as which direction he should pursue as a career.
“Taking
pictures is not what I do. Normally, I design for print and move on to the next
project but digital photography has made it possible to create pleasing, and
sometimes startling, images. I shoot with only one thing in mind and that is to
avoid themes and forethought. I don’t search for one type of photo or situation
and I only occasionally take the time to set up a shot. When I do, it almost
always happens on my kitchen counter and takes less than 15 minutes. I limit
myself solely to iPhone shooting using Hipstamatic or oggl. This also means
shooting in a square format but this is very freeing as it forces me to commit
to a composition and idea quickly. I also occasionally use cheap add-on lenses
to the iPhone which often result in beautiful mistakes. I am on instagram as Hipstamaddiction and on Oggl and Facebook as Hipstamaddict.”
