Born in France in 1965, Laurence Demaison attended the School of Architecture in Strasbourg. Her early interest for photography
dates back to 1990. Since 1993 her approach, strictly based on self-portrait and
only occasionally with the use of dummies or dolls, has been divided into
series, all of them very experimental. The techniques she employs - shot,
development, print - are analogical and applied by the author. No special treatment
occurs beyond the shot, except the chemical inversion of films for some series.
The frequent use of shooting with long exposure times allows her to build up images
containing movement but also to overlay shapes drawn by adding traces of light.
Demaison’s taste for the bizarre pushes her to
create often unrealistic images, through skillful "negative" make-up
during shooting. She sometimes, but rarely, abandons the self-portrait and becomes
a sort of spectator of her own games. This applies to the series presented
here, La petite fille aux allumettes. Tragedy always emerges In all her work, but is often hidden behind her
humour ... or vice versa. Among her books, Personne
(2011) collects 588 examples of his amazing production. Laurence lives in
Strasbourg with photographer Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand.
