Ma Liang aka Maleonn (Shanghai 1972) graduated from Fine Art College of Shanghai University, major in Graphic Design, in 1995. Art Director and born of a family of artists, he started by producing and directing short films. He made a name with commercials, but he soon felt limited in this role and has moved towards a photographer’s career since 2005. After a lot of exhibitions in China and all over the world, in which he revealed himself as an awesome photographer and a creator of elaborate theatrical scenes, his work now represents a crucial moment in China's ever growing contemporary art scene. 

Maleonn likes to describe his work as oniric, built like a poem. His pictures are at the same time disturbing and aesthetically very elaborate. A fetishist, he likes to stage dressed up characters with accessories such as costumes or masks. The development of the consumer society for him was prejudicial to the spirituality of the old Chinese culture: the loss of hope, the collapse of values... Thus, the new face of Shanghai makes the artist nostalgic.
